God has taught us a great deal about reprobates. One hard lesson we had to learn was that the leaders of the cult we left were not just false teachers but reprobates. As such, they are twice cursed, and God himself will reject them ‘Depart from me for I never knew you’.
Not only did we need to recognise that the leaders of the cult we were in were reprobates, but that we ourselves were cursed because of our involvement with these reprobates. Paul tells Timothy to turn away from them, Paul curses them, Peter tell us that the blackness of darkness is forever reserved for them, and John tells us that if we even greet them we are partakers in their wickedness. I think that these warnings are enough for us to wash our hands of them, shake the dust of their villages from our shoes and walk away.
This is hard for many people to do.
It was hard for us to do. For a number of years we tried to work out what had happened. We didn’t know. Were these people knowingly deceiving us, or were they themselves deceived? Yes and Yes. Were they just led astray or were they truly evil? Time has proven that one. Over the years we held hope in our hearts for them. But when one of the elders we had known for a great many years before the cult took hold of our church left, we questioned him. His response was to tell us that he was as an innocent lamb. He compared himself to Jesus who opened not his mouth at those who crucified Him. This man claimed to have been like Jesus when he had preached a false gospel for decades, led others down the path of destruction, taken part in destroying other people’s faith and family and even deliberately destroying people’s marriages. He was not able to be reached, and he was a very old man. We do not believe this man will be in heaven, he is too far gone, and as Paul said, ‘men will grow worse and worse’. He is somebody we need to turn away from.
But for us, the most important question is not ‘how were we dragged into this’, but ‘Lord will you show us our hearts and help us to repent of ever having been involved with this false gospel and its practitioners’. What is ironic is that the cult members are taught to shun people who leave. If you see them in the streets, they literally turn away from you. It is we who should be shunning them, not in retaliation, but in obedience to God, who himself shuns the false brethren and teachers who put heavy yokes on the necks of His people and then say they do nothing wrong.
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves, that we[b] do not lose those things we worked for, but that we[c] may receive a full reward. 9 Whoever transgresses[d] and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.
2 John 2:7-10
12 But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption, 13 and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children
2 Peter 2:12-14 (see whole chapter)
6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed
It is all there in black and white, Peter, John and Paul all testify that those who preach a false gospel are reprobates who are cursed by God. And those who follow the reprobates, support them, give them their money, eat with them, and agree with their teachings are likewise cursed.
I know this is a hard thing to digest, and initially we may not want to deal with this. But I have to say that when you recognise this fact, repent of your involvement and ask God to forgive you, the blessings and freedom you experience are amazing. Things will begin to happen in your life that you will find hard to process mentally because God will begin to bless you in the way He has always wanted to bless you before, but was unable. Because although you are out of the way of these false teachers, you are still excusing them, still visiting their websites, still fellowshipping with the ones who agree with them. You can’t do any of these things and be free from the curse which taints them. Remove yourself from the reprobates, and separate yourself to God, and God will begin to work in your life in miraculous ways.
I wish I could tell everyone who has left our former cult about this, but I know that many of them would simply attack us for being judgemental. So be it, only the Holy Spirit can open somebody’s eyes and we certainly didn’t do anything except read scripture. Even still, it has taken us 12 years to see the truth.
We trust that anyone reading these words will likewise be motivated to seek out the truth and realise what God tells us. There are wicked and evil people who trample the truth underfoot and actively seek out innocent Christians to turn them against the true gospel in order to deceive them with the false, take their money and their adoration and make them like themselves. Don’t do it, and don’t condone their behaviour. They are cursed reprobates and will, as Paul warns, grow worse and worse with their ‘form of godliness’ which deceives thousands but must not deceive the elect.
