The Dichotomy of Babel

eiffel-tower-274200__340

I want you to watch this video.  It’s a wonderful video given by a lovely lady, Barbara Sher who has a great story about how she got started helping others find their dreams.  It is uplifting and it is glorious that so many people are getting to do what they heart desires and others are helping them do it.  Just by speaking up in a group, the whole group can make the ideas of individuals come alive.

I was fascinated watching people’s faces whilst they were listening to Barbara.  She is like the grandmother that you always wanted, and indeed, who wouldn’t have become the person they were always going to be with this lady in your corner.  Who in fact wouldn’t want to inspire that kind of affection and joy seen on the faces of the audience.

But the minute I finished watching this video, I began to think…. Isn’t this what happens in churches?  Aren’t christians supposed to be doing something like this?  Don’t we hear testimonies about how God has miraculously brought things to pass because somebody prayed for something to happen and somehow somebody else gave them money, or a job, or knew somebody who could do something for them?  Isn’t this how God works?  So if that is so, then what is it that is happening here with Barbara’s self-help groups.  What’s the difference.  Is there any?  I almost began to panic.

But then two things came immediately to mind.  The first was the tower of Babel, and the second was that the will of man, however good it may be and however much it is felt in the heart and pursued by the individual, is not the will of God.  We can do all things if we make enough effort.  The tower of Babel is proof enough of that.  And in today’s environment of the exponential multiplication of knowledge, it is almost impossible to keep up with the surges of technology and innovation in science.

It is inevitable that as there is nothing new under the sun so also as it was in the beginning so it will be in the end.  God was able to keep men from their ultimate goal of invading heaven and the eternal for many thousands of years but it seems that here at the end, the Nimrodian vision will have its manifestation. For Nimrod was a type of Antichrist and the real deal will be with us soon if he is not already.

Therefore, this harmless and banal looking old lady with her wonderful groups who are helping others and making other people’s dreams’ come true is simply a smaller version of the Tower of Babel.  It sounds like a poor comparison, but the essence of this is the same.  Moreover, just because somebody wants to run a zoo, or have a girlfriend doesn’t mean that these people are now happy and fulfilled. Essentially what is being procured is somebody else’s desires and regardless of whether they take a month or a year to come to fruition, they are in essence, just desires.  They don’t have to be good, they don’t even have to be for the benefit of mankind, they just are what they are.  And if  you can get somebody else to help you get what you want, then it must be good right?  Of course it is a good thing to make other people happy.  The problem with people’s happiness is that it is not based in righteousness, it is very often based in the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, things which the bible tells us are not going to end in happiness at all.

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

1 John 2 NKJV

Let’s think about church for a minute.  I was confused as I thought about the seeming cloney type manifestation that these groups had to church groups.  I have been in bible studies where somebody has professed a need, I mean a real need like not being able to pay their rent or needing a job or needing a house to live in, and the group has prayed and they have seen God move or somebody has offered help in the same way that Paul and Peter taught in the early church, that those with an abundance help those with a need.  A non-Christian might look at these two things and say they are one and the same but they aren’t.  One group is about ‘dreams’, the other group is about needs.  Nobody in a bible study is going to say, ask the group to get them a girlfriend.  Few would even have the courage to speak up and ask them to pray for them to find a wife.  There is a difference.  One group is seeking to fulfill human desires, the other is seeking the will of God and asking God as a Father to provide actual needs.  It isn’t the same thing at all.

Just as the tower of Babel was not about needs but about power, self-promotion and pride, so the groups Barbara Sher founded are not about seeking the God who created them but about helping ourselves to become what we want to become.

The dichotomy contained in the story of the tower of Babel was that from a human standpoint, what they did was truly magnificent.  But from God’s standpoint, all that magnificence had come together to defy and insult their maker.  The people of Shinar would have known who Noah was, and would have known about the flood and God’s judgement upon the human hybrids who had multiplied upon the earth.  It wasn’t just a case of human beings behaving badly, this was a case of human beings who had lost their humanity.  So the earth needed to be cleansed from them.  Noah and his three sons were evidently the only ones who were righteous before God and it was through Noah’s son Shem that the lineage of Christ came.  Satan was all fired up to destroy God’s own plan to crush his head, but he failed.  Again. The tower of Babel was Satan’s attempt to get at God another way.  He’s doing the same thing again.  He will fail.  Again.

Whether we are building a tower which we think will mark us out as god-like, or just wanting to write a novel, if our plans and dreams are purely self-generated and self-interpreted, we are like the Ninevites, the Babylonians, the Sodomites, the Gomorrahites and all the other ites who caused trouble to God and His people for centuries.  We will simply be following our own desires at the expense of God’s.  And for many people that’s OK.  So for those, they will take a hold of Barbara’s self-empowering methods to chase after what you want and they will uphold her as a great teacher and mother of all who feel isolated from getting what they want.  Of course we can do whatever we want whenever we want it.  That has never been in question.  The real problem is not being able to do whatever we put our minds to.  The real problem is why we are not able to do what God wants us to do.  Why, when God is manifestly greater in love and beneficence than a lovely friendly lady like Barbara Sher are we more often likely to avoid His will, His desires for us, even His gaze upon us.  Why?  Because God is holy, perfect, righteous and all-powerful.  He is also our creator.  He is to be worshipped and feared, and in order to become a part of His will, we have to die to our own will and who really wants to have any part of their will or person denied?  It is not normal human behaviour.  It IS normal human behaviour to create great monuments to our bad-assery.

So, while it is uplifting to hear Barbara Sher recount her start in helping others get what they want in life, ultimately, it is not and was not the reason human beings were created in the first place.  As Christians, we are called to help others in need, but again, we are also called to help our brothers and sisters, not the whole world.  When Jesus told the story of the good Samaritan, he was not talking to the secular untaught masses, he was talking to Jews and those connected to them.  He was telling people who were often blood related as often as not to help their brothers and sisters and to good to those in need, to not pass by on the other side if they saw a man in trouble and the use of the Samaritan was pointed.  Samaritans and Jews were at odds with each other.

The Samaritans were a group of people who lived in Samaria – an area north of Jerusalem. They were half-Jews and half-Gentiles. When Assyria captured the northern kingdom of Israel in 721 B.C. some were taken in captivity while others left behind. The ones left behind intermarried with the Assyrians. Thus these people were neither fully Hebrews nor fully Gentiles. The Samaritans had their own unique copy of the first five books of Scripture as well as their own unique system of worship. At the time of Jesus the Jews and the Samaritans did not deal with one another. Jesus, however, ministered to the people of Samaria preaching the good news to them.

Blue Letter Bible

So even Jesus recognised that these were of the same lineage as the Jews despite their intermarrying and their corrupted beliefs.  Jesus was still their Messiah.  He was telling them the gospel, He wanted to meet their needs as well.

For in fact, this is the key to all of this.  Our greatest need is for a Saviour, not for a girlfriend or to be able to dance with Patrick Swayze.  These might be fine things in and of themselves and not exactly wrong or sinful, but they emanate from a sinful heart which chases after the things of the world.  Our greatest joy, our greatest fulfillment comes when Christ reigns in our hearts and fills us with His Holy Spirit.

The Dumbing Down of Christianity

low-light-2606154__340

We are supposed to be lights in the darkness.

But the light of most of the evangelical church today is shrouded by deception, false teaching and an almost joyful embrace with the world.

You might say that this has always been the case.

Paul had to talk to Peter about sucking up to the Judaizers.  Paul also warned us about false teachers, false Christs, false brethren and so on.  Jesus, when asked by his disciples about the signs of the end times, told them to see to it that they were not deceived.  But deception comes on quiet feet.  It moves imperceptibly.  One minute you are in a loving caring environment with free preaching of the gospel and a joy in the new life you have been given through Christ’s death and resurrection.  Next you are being told who to marry, what job to do and where to live.  We have seen it happen.

The one and only provision against a false gospel is to know the true gospel.

The one and only provision against the invasion of the world into your church is to ensure that you are walking in the Spirit on a daily basis.  We need to pray, we need to fight and we need to stay alert.  It has ever been the case.

But what happens when pastors, elders and congregation members are willing to have all kinds of false teaching walk into their church and are not willing to question or to speak against what is in many cases a blatant heresy?  It means that people have become lazy.  They have become unwilling to guard their hearts, and the lives and families of their friends and brothers and sisters in Christ.  We need to ensure that the checks and balances of our lives are being checked and balanced.

The problem is that too many congregations and individuals are not checking because they feel safe.  They feel comfortable.  They feel that it is somebody else’s job to do the checking and they don’t want to stick their necks out.  Nor do they want to have to do their own research and reading.  They don’t want to have to think that it’s all down to them. But if we are going to maintain our integrity as Christians, we need to recognise that maturation as believers involves looking out for the souls of others.  We need to be our brother’s keeper.  We don’t take responsibility for their lives of course, only God does that.  But we do keep watch, we do speak out when we see somebody about to fall, and we walk in love.

The apostle John talked of a love for the brethren.  He said that if we don’t have that love, then the love of God is not in us.  It is a staggering thought.  The thing is that our love for our brethren is only there because God’s love dwells in us.  It is in fact the love of God itself which loves any of us, our own human affection is not capable of loving as God loves.  In fact, left to our own devices, most of us would not fellowship with each other at all. We are not brought together by mutual interests as every other group in the world is.  We are brought together by the love of God and the salvation of Jesus Christ.  We are new creations.  We are something completely different to every other human being on the earth. Therefore, this life which is born in us compels us to do things we would not naturally do.  Not only that, but our hearts are changed.  Our hearts now love whereas before they did not love others they only loved ourselves and those we deemed worthy of that love.

So why do so many Christians think nothing of joining themselves together with the world?  We cannot join with unbelievers.  We who love cannot be joined to those who do not love.  We are of a different nature. We cannot join light with darkness, there is no grey area, there is only light and lack of light.  There is not a place where both co-exist. We may think that twilight can count as light. But we are wrong.  Twilight is the recession of light, it proves the moving away from the light, not the source of light. And if we have the light within us, then there can be no twilight.  Everywhere we go there is light.  But if we choose to join with the world and shade the light with our own flesh, there is nowhere else to go.  The trouble with this is that we don’t often even know we are doing it.

It happens imperceptibly.

You ignore the still small voice of the Holy Spirit speaking so quietly about something which you know is wrong.  You hush the voice of your conscience, you go about doing what you know you shouldn’t do.  Then you do it again.  Then you keep doing it. Finally the voice is silenced, but it doesn’t go away.  If you keep doing that enough and keep doing it every time the Holy Spirit speaks, you will grieve the Holy Spirit and He will eventually stop speaking at all.  Before you are aware of it, He will retreat to some place where you are not, and finding God will be that much harder next time. Not impossible, but not without difficulty.  If you are not quick to remedy the breach, the breach will grow wider.  Eventually your whole life becomes so backslidden that you no longer have a desire to even pray.  You push it away and don’t think that it is even important.

Soon you will get to a place where you can comfortably call yourself ‘Christian’ because you still go to church, even if  it is only now and again, but you are actually living in the world and you have become ‘of’ the world.  Soon, all that will be left is an empty shell and even that will only have a passing resemblance to anything religious.  You will have a ‘form’ of godliness without any of its power.  And what is the power of godliness?  Is it holiness?  Is it faith?

I will let Charles Spurgeon answer this question.

Let us now remember what they did not have. They had “the form” of godliness. But they were denied “the power.” What is that power? God Himself is the power of godliness; the Holy Spirit is the life and force of it. Godliness is the power which brings a man to God and binds him to Him; godliness is that which creates repentance towards God and faith in Him; godliness is the result of a great change of heart in reference to God and His character. Godliness looks towards God and mourns its distance from Him. Godliness hastens to draw near and rests not till it is at home with God. Godliness makes a man like God; godliness leads a man to love God and to serve God. It brings the fear of God before his eyes and the love of God into his heart. Godliness leads to consecration, to sanctification, to concentration.
The godly man seeks first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and expects other things to be added to him. Godliness makes a man commune with God, and gives him a partnership with God in His glorious designs. And so it prepares him to dwell with God forever. Many who have the form of godli-ness are strangers to this power, and so are in religion, worldly, in prayer mechanical, in public one thing and in private another. True godliness lies in spiritual power and they who are without this are dead while they live.
What is the general history of those who have not this power? Well, dear friends, their course usually runs thus—they do not begin with denying the power but they begin by trying to do without it. They would like to become members of the church and as they fear that they are not fit for it, they look about for something which looks like conversion and the new birth. They try to persuade themselves that they have been changed—they accept emotion as regeneration and a belief of doctrine for belief in Christ. It is rather hard at first to reckon brass as gold, but it grows easier as it is persisted in. Patching up a conversion, and manufacturing regeneration, they venture forward. At the first they are a good deal suspicious of themselves, but they industriously kill every question by treating it as a needless doubt. Thus, by degrees, they believe a lie. The next step is easy—they deceive themselves and come to believe that they are surely saved. All is now right for eternity, so they fancy. And they fold their arms in calm security. Meeting with godly people, they put on a bold front and speak up as bravely as if they were the true soldiers of King Jesus. Good people are charmed to meet with fresh brethren, and at once take them into their confidence; thus they deceive others and help to strengthen themselves in their false hope.
Spurgeon talks about those who have had a false conversion, and it is these ones who contribute to the darkness in the congregation.  But I am talking about those who fall away from the faith through lack of attention to their relationship with God and also, it pains me to say, the lack of due diligence by those around them.  If you see a brother or sister falling away, say something.  Don’t just assume that its none of your business.  Is it your business if somebody else’s child is in the middle of the road and about to be run over by a car?  No sane human being would allow the child to be run over if there is life in their body and strength in their limbs.  We would rush over to save them.  In the same way, we rush to save those who are about to fall and hope to appeal to their consciences.
No, in the church today, there is a lack of those who are willing to make those choices.  They don’t want to be seen as busybodies.  They don’t want to rock the boat.  It is an even worse case if pastors and elders fail to reach out, yet so many of them do.  If you go to them, they are even more hostile.  Nobody is allowed to even entreat a leader who has aligned themselves with the world or with false teaching.  You become a threat, an annoyance and a scoundrel who should mind their own business.  You make them feel uncomfortable therefore you are wrong.  There is no real desire to listen,  nor is there a desire to really consider what is being said.
Each one of us is accountable to God for our choices.  We are not responsible for somebody else’s fall from Grace.  But consider this.  Eternity is a very very long time.  And there is no end to it.  If walking with the Lord and continuing on in the faith means that you end up walking with the Lord and living with Him in Eternity and seeing your eternal reward, whatsoever that might be, then wouldn’t you rather tolerate discomfort and even a little pain now if it means your reward is greater?
There is too little preaching about heaven and hell today.  There is too little understanding of what it means to be with Jesus for all eternity.  If we took these things seriously we would not be making friends with the world, we would be looking to save them.
I leave you with the transcript of the words found on an old cassette tape in a Chinese house church in 1995 where the group were praying and bringing messages in tongues and translations.  When the tape was played back a song was being sung where there was no singing and certainly no musical instruments.  But the message was clear.  If you wish to hear the tape for yourselves you can hear it here.  It was called the Shandong miracle, and here is the translation of the message.   Jesus is returning soon.  Let us be prepared!
1. The famine is becoming more and more critical. There are more and more earthquakes. The situation is becoming more and more sinister. People are fighting against each other, nation against nation. Disasters are more and more severe.
2. The whole environment is deteriorating. Disasters are more and more severe. People’s hearts are wicked, and they do not worship the true God. Disasters are more and more severe.
3. Floods and droughts are more and more frequent. There is more and more homosexuality and incurable diseases. Disasters are more and more severe.
4. The climates are becoming more and more abnormal. The earth is more and more restless. The skies have been broken. The atmosphere is distorted. Disasters are more and more severe. Chorus: The end is near. The revelation of love has been manifested. Rise up, rise up, rescue souls. The end is near. Rise up, rise up, rescue souls.

Last Christian Standing

photo_803_20060112.jpg

As I write this the vestiges of ex-cyclone Debbie have passed over Brisbane. For the last couple of days it has been a howling gale. This morning a peaceful composition of golden sunlight and cool wind gusts.  Brisbane doesn’t get cyclones thank God, but we always get at least a week of rain every time a cyclone hits the mid-east coast of Queensland.  It’s not normal rain, its a deluge. In fact on the radar you can still see the old eye and the clouds circling around it, much slower than before but the pattern is still clear.  These last few days have made me think of Noah and how it would have been to be the only Christian family in a world gone mad.  Genesis 6:5 tells it like this:

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually

In the Mount Olivet discourse, Jesus told us that the last days, the days before His return, the situation would be very similar to the days of Noah.  People would be unaware of the coming of judgement.  They would be giving in marriage and feasting as though tomorrow would in fact come.  But their works would mark them out as evil.

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

This is what many are seeing now and are agreeing that we are in the end times before Jesus return. In fact, it is the reference to Noah’s day that makes me believe in a pre-tribulation catching away of the church into heaven for the marriage supper of the Lamb.  Who would be giving in marriage when the world is in intense trauma the like of which nobody had ever seen before?  You would certainly be looking for the return of Christ at such a time, or at least the appearance of a saviour, you would not be gaily planning the rest of your life.

Jesus is not the only one who spoke of end time falling away from the faith. Paul mentioned it to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3. In fact Paul’s words mirror those of Jesus.

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

While Paul may have been referring to current events, and Christians since Pentecost would have been looking upward for Jesus return, the fact that 2000 years later we are seeing events take place which would not have been able to occur historically should give us pause.  There is a great deal written about end times prophecies on the internet, but I want to ask you this.  What would you do if everyone around you forsook Jesus and you were the last Christian left standing.    Remember Elijah?

And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.15 And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

Elijah was another prophet who endured climate upheaval and communed with God.  He had come to a place of utter despair because of the severe testing and opposition he had from demonic principalities and powers.  He felt he was in the last days himself, but God assured him that there were indeed seven thousand others.  That is quite a number. I would be more than happy with seven thousand friends who believed the same way I did.  Even if that number was worldwide. It would be much more comforting if they were in my city of course. But I have been asking myself the same question.  What would I do if everyone else I knew had fallen away?  Would I still stand firm?  You can’t just gloss this one over.  The situation in churches worldwide is desperate.  False doctrines which used to be just here and there now seem to be converging on the church at a rate of knots;  New Age philosophies, Seeker Sensitive watering down of the Word. Sin and repentance and the Cross are now just fairytales, as many so called Christian pastors are preaching a gospel which excludes biblical truths and focuses instead on narratives which only look Christian but are in fact kool-aide laced with cyanide.

white_cloud_sky_small.jpg

Jesus said that if we followed Him we would endure persecution. The problem for many Christians these days is that not only are we receiving persecution from the world we are receiving it from others who profess Christ as their saviour.  Historically, this is not uncommon. Protestants have been slaughtered by Catholics, Protestants have slaughtered other Protestants.  I even read recently that in the early days of America, the Quakers were persecuted by the Puritans.  Mind you in Cromwellian England, the Puritans persecuted just about everybody.  It is truly disturbing what some people will do in the name of Jesus.

However, for us, it is not so much persecution as peaceful protest.  We walk into a Baptist church and find that they are not Baptist at all, they are preaching a neo-liberal, post-modern, eco-gospel and going on about living in ‘intentional community’ with the urban poor.  We try talking to the pastors about this but have distractions thrown up in our face. They are not interested in discussing false doctrine, they want you to keep your concerns to yourself, they are perfectly happy being double-minded. Last year they hosted a ‘Friends of Israel’ meeting at their church, this year they are adamantly pro-Palestinian. WHY?

I was watching a video of US ambassador to Israel Nikki Haley explaining that the Trump government were now supporting Israel, the only democratic country in the Middle East. She reported that an attempt to place a Palestinian representative in a high ranking position in the UN was met with unmitigated opposition and apparently nixed.  This is good news to many supporters of Israel.  It concerns us greatly that a church should suddenly shift its allegiances.  However, when you look at the fact that they have taken on a new pastor couple who have recently graduated from a bible college which is pro-liberal and supports such speakers as Shane Claiborne, the picture becomes much clearer.  Claiborne along with many liberals is pro-Palestinian.  Why?  Because people like Claiborne are being used by the powers that be to introduce a world religion which is slowly but surely taking over the visible church.  What is deeply troubling is that so many are simply following the pied piper into destruction.  Actually now that I think about it, the Pied Piper wore a coat of many colours.  This new ‘religion’ of the Liberal left is one which conflates all the world religions into one, disparages the Bible as no longer the inerrant Word of God, and claims Jesus is not the only way to God.  The pipers, or seducers of this new religion are playing a tune which many people can dance to.  Yet it is the same lie the serpent spoke to Eve. You don’t need God, you can be like God instead.

tree-el0_small.jpg

An article on my newsfeed yesterday told me that in Indonesia recently a python was found which had swallowed the body of a man whole.  I won’t post the picture as it was pretty disturbing.  You can find it if you look for it.  But the thought of a python swallowing a human is profound. The python Spirit in scripture is the spirit of divination.  In Acts 16, Paul and Silas went to Philippi and met a girl possessed with the spirit.  She worked as a prophetess and told fortunes for money.

16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” 18 And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour. 19 But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.

This is an extract from Wikipedia about the Python spirit of divination.

There are various versions of Python’s birth and death at the hands of Apollo. In the Homeric Hymn to Apollo, now thought to have been composed in 522 BCE when the archaic period in Greek history was giving way to the Classical period,[4] a small detail is provided regarding Apollo’s combat with the serpent, in some sections identified as the deadly Drakaina, or her parent.

The version related by Hyginus[5] holds that when Zeus lay with the goddess Leto, and she was to deliver Artemis and Apollo, Hera was jealous and sent Python to pursue Leto throughout the lands, so that she could not deliver wherever the sun shone. Thus when Apollo was grown he wanted to avenge his mother’s plight and pursued Python, making his way straight for Mount Parnassus where the serpent dwelled, and chased it to the oracle of Gaia at Delphi; there he dared to penetrate the sacred precinct and kill it with his arrows beside the rock cleft where the priestess sat on her tripod. Robert Graves, who habitually read into primitive myths a retelling of archaic political and social turmoil, saw in this the capturing by Hellenes of a pre-Hellenic shrine. “To placate local opinion at Delphi,” he wrote in The Greek Myths, “regular funeral games were instituted in honour of the dead hero Python, and her priestess was retained in office.”

The politics are conjectural, but the myth reports that Zeus ordered Apollo to purify himself for the sacrilege and instituted the Pythian Games, over which Apollo was to preside, as penance for his act.

Erwin Rohde wrote that the Python was an earth spirit, who was conquered by Apollo, and buried under the Omphalos, and that it is a case of one god setting up his temple on the grave of another.[6] The priestess of the oracle at Delphi became known as the Pythia, after the place-name Pytho, which Greeks explained as named after the rotting (πύθειν) of the slain serpent’s corpse in the strength of Hyperion (day) or Helios (the sun).[7

It is clear to me that the spirit behind the New Religion which is being forced upon the church is the Python Spirit. It is squeezing the life out of genuine believers.  Satan wants to destroy the true Christians of this age, and he will do this by bringing in the New Age as he has been doing for centuries, slowly and carefully.  This is a long game, and he is in no hurry, but currently, the changes are happening so fast it is our concern that believers are being overtaken without knowledge and without warning.

We need to consider what might happen if everyone we know turns against us to this new religion, and we are left the last Christian standing.  I don’t believe we will be truly alone, because just as God had his seven thousand in the days of Elijah, so he will have at present.

It is interesting that I heard a wonderful and stirring hymn the other day called ‘The Days of Elijah’.  Here are the lyrics.

Days Of Elijah

These are the days of Elijah
Declaring the word of the Lord, yeah
And these are the days of Your servant Moses
Righteousness being restored

These are the days of great trials
Of famine and darkness and sword
Still we are the voice in the desert crying
Prepare ye the way of the Lord!

Say, behold He comes, riding on the clouds
Shining like the sun at the trumpet’s call
Lift your voice, year of Jubilee
Out of Zion’s hill, salvation comes

And these are the days of Ezekiel
The dry bones becoming flesh
And these are the days of Your servant, David
Rebuilding a temple of praise

And these are the days of the harvest
The fields are all white in Your world
And we are the laborers that are in Your vineyard
Declaring the Word of the Lord

Say, behold He comes, riding on the clouds
Shining like the sun at the trumpet’s call
Lift your voice, year of Jubilee
Out of Zion’s hill, salvation comes

Behold He comes, riding on the clouds
Shining like the sun at the trumpet’s call
Lift your voice, year of Jubilee
Out of Zion’s hill, salvation comes

So while the world is being rapidly changed by agents of the enemy, we remain and we stand, having put on the armour of God.  We occupy until He comes.  We will ever look to the skies awaiting His return and looking for the blessed hope who is He who both sustains and keeps us in these last days. May all my brothers and sisters, the true believers who are not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ link together in the Holy Spirit and pray for endurance.  We will need it.

God bless you all.
